I am so excited to be joining the Enchanted Homeschool Mom and many other wonderful bloggers in the 2014-2015 Poppins Book Nook! The Poppins Book Nook is a monthly themed virtual book club for kids ages preschool and up. Each month participants will read a book based on that month’s theme and share crafts and activities that go along with the book on the last Monday of every month. It’s a great way to learn about different topics, build literacy skills and have some fun!
The theme for April is “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” which is right up our alley! Caden being the typical boy that he is has always had an interest in anything with wheels or that flies. He is always playing with his toy cars and gets so excited when a plane flies overhead!
I had a difficult time choosing a book for this month, there are so many great transportation themed books for young children! I ended up choosing to read a simple classic book about a train, Freight Train by Donald Crews.
I’ve had this idea to create a fun train themed bath for Caden ever since I created this car themed bath. I knew I wanted to make train tracks, but couldn’t figure out what to make for the background until I was inspired by the book Freight Train to create train cars to stick on the bathtub walls. To create the freight train cars I used colored craft foam, a black permanent marker and the pattern used by Storytime Katie for her Clickety- Clack flannel board. This flannel board is amazing, I just translated it into craft foam so we could have some bath time fun with it! To create the train tracks I cut strips of white craft foam about three inches wide and used black and brown permanent marker to draw train rails on it. A word of warning: the brown permanent marker washed off in the water and nearly stained my white tub and counter top. Thankfully I was able to wash it off with bleach cleaner.
We read Freight Train by Donald Crews a couple of times this month and once I had completed the foam pieces we enjoyed the book during bath time. As I read Caden the story I handed him the freight train cars so he could stick them up on the bath tub wall.
Reading this Freight Train with its colorful train cars was also a good way to review color identification, and learn about different types of freight train cars.
Of course we had to bring Thomas the Tank Engine and some friends into the bath so we could drive them along the tracks. This was my original inspiration for the train themed bath. I hope this has inspired you to create your own bath time, story time fun! Below you will find the linky so you can link up and read about more crafts and activities inspired by this months Poppins Book Nook “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” theme.

Great detail on the foam train pieces! That looks like one fun bath-time!
Such a great topic this month! And we love that book here! What a cute activity!
Very cute idea! I have considered doing something similar, but not to go with a book. I just figured if I did I would never get Eli out of the bath!
The tracks are fantastic, this looks like a great book to go with a fun bath!
Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
