How to Make Math Grid Games with Stickers

This week I am sharing a simple math game you can make and play with your preschoolers! I first learned about math grid games in the Sally Moomaw book More Than Counting. Math Grid Games with Stickers is an awesome way to teach preschoolers basic math skills including counting & one-to-one correspondence. It’s perfect to make for preschoolers because it can be customized to the interests of the child(ren) and it is a quick game that gets in a lot of learning in a short amount of time!

To make your own grid game you’ll need:

  • Print two 9-Grids
  • Colored cardstock
  • scissors or paper-cutter
  • stickers
  • small gems or other game board markers

To make the 9-grid board, I printed off two grid pages and trimmed them down to size. Then I attached it to some colored cardstock, added the stickers I chose and laminated them for added durability.

Caden is super into Transformers right now so I ordered some stickers and made a 9-grid game board. We used blue glass gems to represent the Transformers energon and roll the die to “help the Transformers get their power”. Caden loved this game and was very interested in playing and counting!

I also had some Cars stickers, so I made another 9-grid game set with those too! But instead of using glass gems, we used plastic nuts from Caden’s tools set. The idea behind this game is to “fix the wheels on all the cars”. Adding a story to math games gives preschoolers a sense of purpose and makes learning more interesting.

Another way to make math grid games is with felt, like I did for the Pumpkin Grid Math Game!

This is a great idea. I know my kindergartner is working on seeing the numbers different ways, so this is a really good way to work on that.

I’m sorry Bonnie, in all my excitement about posting this how-to I guess I forgot to make it clear how the game is played. The object of the game is to be the first player to fill all your squares. So the players take turns rolling the die and placing however many markers in the squares until they are filled. It’s a very simple game, perfect for preschoolers!

My son would absolutely love the Transformers game. Roll the die to “help the Transformers get their power” is genius! Thanks for linking to the stickers too. We just had some that came with a pack of Valentine’s cards, but they’re gone now so I added these to my Amazon cart. You’ve also inspired me to create a Transformers activity. πŸ™‚
