Last year (2014-2015) we had so much fun participating in the Poppins Book Nook hosted by Enchanted Homeschooling Mom that we decided to participate again! And we couldn’t be more excited because we love book-inspired activities! The Poppins Book Nook is a monthly online kids book club that is completely free! Each month features a different theme in which bloggers choose a book and share an activity with their readers! It’s a great way to learn about different topics and build literacy skills.
This year Jill from Enchanted Homeschooling Mom has chosen some great themes that are going to be a lot of fun to explore throughout the next year and are sure to stretch our minds with a wide selection of books! Check out the monthly themes below!

The theme for the month of June is Forests/Woods. Living is rural New Hampshire we are surrounded by woods. It’s been great to experience all the adventures and nature that the woods have to offer and we have started to collect these wonderful take along nature guides. They are great books for kids with beautiful illustrations and information about all kinds of things found in nature! We have Trees, Leaves and Bark, Caterpillars, Bugs and Butterflies, Rocks, Fossils and Arrowheads, and Birds, Nests and Eggs.
We’ve use these books often when we find something interesting outside and we want more information! Such as when we found a Banded Woollybear Caterpillar last fall! I also like to include them on our nature table.
Our little nature table is in a corner of our house. This little nature table is just the right size for a small nature collection. To set our nature table up, I used a wooden T.V. tray we weren’t using, making it easy to put away if we need the space for something else.
Nature Table Ideas with Books
Leaves, Trees and Bark Nature Table
We’ve collected many things from our wooded property, including a large piece of birch bark we found on the ground, a few different types of leaves, different shapes and sizes of pine cones, acorns, maple seeds and twigs. The magnifying glass is a great addition for close inspection of our nature artifacts!
Rocks, Fossils and Arrowheads Nature Table
This neat nature table features a few rock we’ve found on our property and these neat fossils we found on a beach in Rhode Island. I’ve also included these really cool rock and mineral sample kits which contain all the artifacts featured in the book plus more! The microscope is great for getting a close look at the different rocks and minerals.
Birds, Nests and Eggs Nature Table
This nature table has the two birds nests I’ve saved for just for the day when I could set up a nature table! I’ve also added the little bird figurines from the Backyard Birds Safari Ltd Toob. These little birds are great for matching up to the pages of the book which also features lots of information about how different birds build their nests! I think we have a cardinal nest and a robin’s nest!
Do you have a nature table or display at home? What do you include on it?
