Fine Motor Preschool Toddlers

Pumpkin Pick-Up & Counting {Fine Motor Fridays}

Happy Fine Motor Friday! We (Lalymom, Craftulate, School Time Snippets, and myself) have had so much fun posting our fine motor activities this past month that we decided to extend Fine Motor Friday into November! Every Friday we will be posting fun activities that promote development of fine motor skills. So after reading this post you will want to go check out what fun they have posted about!

We also invited a couple more of our bloggy friends to join us! So please welcome Sarah of Little Bins for Little Hands and Emma from P is for Preschooler who will be joining us next week! Make sure you check out the fine motor fun they have going on  too!

Pumpkin Pick-Up & Counting - Stir the Wonder

Pumpkin Pick-Up & Counting

What you need for this game is:

  • affiliate-links-2Mini Artificial Pumpkins & Gourds
  • Mini Tongs
  • Basket

This is my fun little twist to a game a first learned about at Tired, Need Sleep that used apples instead of little pumpkins or gourds. We first played this game with mini apples back in September, but this week when I thought it was time to put the apple themed stuff away I remembered that I had little pumpkins and gourds from last years fall sensory bin that would be fun to play with too!  To play the game you dump out all the pumpkins, roll the number cube or die and then pick up that number pumpkins using the tongs and put them back in the basket.

Caden enjoys playing this game and actually initiated playing this game himself. Right now we don’t worry too much about the counting part of the game and focus more on the fine motor practice that this game offers.

It is pretty difficult to use the tongs on these slippery and light weight pumpkins. Especially our spatula tongs, regular mini tongs would probably work better. Caden had a hard time with it and almost gave up. But with some encouragement he persevered and finished putting all the pumpkins back in the basket.

I really like this activity! It is a simple to set up and is a fun fine motor and counting game that could easily be adapted to whatever theme you are working on at the time.

Happy Fine Motor Friday!

    Love it! My daughter recently learned about dice and I think adding that element would just add to the enjoyment for her! She really likes using tongs, and I always tend to think of what would be easiest to grab but it is smart to try things that present a challenge!

    Love this simple activity!! And despite the tongs not working the best, I think they are pretty cool! Perhaps it was because the tips were more straight than curved tongs?! And I like that you added the dice for some extra learning!

      Hi Faye, I got the spatula tongs at a store called The Christmas Tree Shoppe. I haven’t seen them anywhere else, but I’m sure they probably are available at other stores.
