Alphabet Book Activities Preschool Sensory

Shiver Me Letters Sensory Bin

Pinterest-2

I am so excited to be joining the Enchanted Homeschooling Mom and many other wonderful bloggers in the 2014-2015 Poppins Book Nook! The Poppins Book Nook is a monthly themed virtual book club for kids ages preschool and up. Each month participants will read a book based on that month’s theme and share crafts and activities that go along with the book on the last Monday of every month. It’s a great way to learn about different topics, build literacy skills and have some fun!

The theme for July’s Poppins Book Nook is “Ye Old Pirates”! I’ve known for a while which book we would be reading and doing an activity for this month and I am really excited to finally share with you our Shiver Me Letters Sensory Bin & Pirate Play activity!

'Shiver Me Letters' Sensory Bin & Pirate Play | Stir the Wonder #poppinsbooknook #kbn #preschool

Shiver Me Letters by June Sobel (affiliate link) is a really cute pirate ABC book. These pirates are on a mission seeking alphabet treasure! We’ve read it several times over the past year and Caden has enjoyed it each time! And he loved playing with this sensory bin and pirate set up!

Shiver Me Letters Sensory Bin and Pirate Play

I set this up on a low table in our kitchen so Caden could play while I read the story. This was his first time playing with the Cra-Z-Sand and he was fascinated by its texture and its moldable behavior. He loved burying the pirate figures in the sand and digging them back out. He was not so interested in finding the letters or putting the puzzle back together.

Pirate Sensory Bin

As a side note, I am not a fan of this Cra-Z-Sand. It is pretty cool to play with and cleans up pretty easily as long as you don’t get it wet. But I am not sure what it is made of and since it says to wash your hands after playing with it, I am a little leery of keeping it. I won’t be buying  anymore that’s for sure!

I’ve never heard of that Cra-Z-Sand, but the wash your hands after thing would make me nervous too. And that pirate boat is pretty amazing!

I think it’s a kinetic sand knock off. I found it at Target. It’s not sand at all, it feels like foam dust and gets really sticky like glue if it gets wet. I don’t really like it at all. I thought it was like kinetic sand or Sands Alive, but I’m not sure at all since I’ve never seen either of those products.

That sounds like an awesome book and something my boys would enjoy. I have never heard of Cra-Z-sand either, I usually make my own from a recipe I found online.

I love your sensory bin! I haven’t heard of Cra-Z Sand either, but it looks like it is a better alternative than real sand in the house!
Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!

I’ve love to win Pirate Stories for Little Children. (By the way, we have read Shiver Me Letters before, and I wanted to let you know that I love how you turned it into a great, hands-on alphabet learning activity!)
