Working on early math skills can sometimes be a challenge. Especially when your preschooler isn’t interested in doing anything that remotely looks like school work, even when it is hands-on. So you have to get creative and make learning into a game! This Dinosaur Color Sorting Activity was just the ticket for getting Caden to practice color recognition and sorting by color!

Dinosaur Color Sorting Activity
This color sorting activity is quick to set up! Your kids will be eager to get right down to sorting and learning to recognize colors! Here are the supplies you’ll need:
- Craft stick fences (See the Big Red Barn Literacy Activity for tutorial)
- Play Dough
- Foam Stickers
- Dinosaur Counters
How to Set Up
To set up this color sorting activity arrange the craft stick fences into squares using small balls of play dough to stand up the pieces and label them with each color. I used square foam stickers for this. Then arrange the dinosaur counters outside the fences and invite your child to sort them into the fences.
To invite Caden to play I said, “oh no! All the dinosaurs have escaped their fences! Help me get them back into the correct pens by sorting by color!” This worked like a charm! He got started right away and easily sorted them all by color back into the fences! Then he promptly wiped out the whole set up! That’s a boy for ya! 😉
Here’s what the whole set up looked like, after I recreated it from Caden’s destructive finale!

My daughter was the same way – if it had a hint of being educational she was completely turned off. I love those craft stick fences – great for small world play too!
This is perfect! My boys will be all about this and we already have those dinos! Thanks!
