For the month of February the Virtual Book Club to Kids chose to focus on Dr. Seuss. There are so many great books by Dr. Seuss; from The Lorax to Hop on Pop that you could spend a whole month reading his books and still have many leftover! Dr. Seuss is truly one of my favorite children’s author and he is quickly becoming one of Caden’s favorites too!
This week Caden was learning all about parts of the body so I thought The Foot Book would be a perfect book to go along with what he was studying. We read the book a couple of times and at the end of the week we got creative (and messy!).
I put a large sheet of paper down on the kitchen floor. I used paper from our easel roll, but any large sheet of white paper will do. It would also be helpful to tape the paper down. I wasn’t very prepared for this activity and our paper slid around (not a good combination with slippery paint!).
I used finger paint (ironic huh?!) and squirted a bunch in a tray, stripped Caden down to his diaper and let him explore the paint with his toes. Even I got in on the action! Caden is hesitant about messy play so I had to demonstrate that it was okay and fun! And it was FUN!
Foot painting (or painting with a brush for toddlers) is all about the creative process. I just wanted Caden to experience the feel of the paint between his toes and use them to make marks on the paper. There were no directions or rules. So what if the paper ripped and we smeared paint all over the floor?! We had FUN and that’s what matters!
