Hedgie Blasts Off Sensory Bin

Pinterest-2

I am so excited to be joining the Enchanted Homeschooling Mom and many other wonderful bloggers in the 2014-2015 Poppins Book Nook! The Poppins Book Nook is a monthly themed virtual book club for kids affiliate-links-2ages preschool and up. Each month participants will read a book based on that month’s theme and share crafts and activities that go along with the book on the last Monday of every month. It’s a great way to learn about different topics, build literacy skills and have some fun!

The theme for October’s Poppins Book Nook is “Beyond Our Planet”! I’ve known for months now we would read Hedgie Blasts Off! by Jan Brett for this months theme and I am so excited to finally share with you the fun sensory bin I created to go along with this super cute and silly book!

Hedgie Blasts Off! Sensory Bin | Stir the Wonder #poppinsbooknook #kbn @#kidlit #sensorybin

Hedgie Blasts Off! by Jan Brett is a cute book about a hedgehog who dreams of being an astronaut. He finally get’s his chance because he is the only one who can fit into the small space ship and unclog the Big Sparkler geyser which is full of alien coins! The result is the spectacular  display of sparkles and the bloom of flowers!

To create your own sensory bin you’ll need the following supplies:

  • bin
  • plaster strips
  • styrofoam bowl
  • gray paint
  • sequins
  • gray-ish pom poms
  • craft flowers
  • coins
  • hedgehog
  • space ship
  • alien & UFO

Plaster Crater

To create this sensory bin we started by making the Big Sparkler Geyser. To do this I cut the bottom out of a styrofoam bowl. Then we used the plaster strips we were given by CraftProjectIdeas.com and following the directions on the package we plastered the bowl creating a crater. Once the plaster was dry, we painted it with gray tempera paint.

When the crater was all ready, I set up the sensory bin. First I put the Big Sparkler geyser in the middle of the bin and filled in around it with gray-ish colored pom poms, blue & silver sequins and flowers I had left over from my scrapbooking days. I used our Play Mobile 123 rocket for Hedgie, which he fits in perfectly! Our hedgehog is from the Safari Ltd Pets Toob. And created a UFO using an empty applesauce or fruit cup and a taped on cardboard circle wrapped in tin foil. Inside the UFO is the little alien from our DIY Mini Montessori Alphabet Box.

Caden really enjoys listening to this book and he loved playing with this sensory bin!

One afternoon Caden and Daddy sat on the rug to play with this sensory bin. While Daddy read the story, Caden played and explored all the interesting elements in this bin.

Caden had fun playing with the coins and making Big Sparkler explode! He explored the texture of the pom poms and paper flowers. And he loved making the rocket blast off!
