I am so excited to be joining the Enchanted Homeschooling Mom and many other wonderful bloggers in the 2014-2015 Poppins Book Nook! The Poppins Book Nook is a monthly themed virtual book club for kids
ages preschool and up. Each month participants will read a book based on that month’s theme and share crafts and activities that go along with the book on the last Monday of every month. It’s a great way to learn about different topics, build literacy skills and have some fun!
The theme for November’s Poppins Book Nook is “To the Kitchen!” And with Thanksgiving just around the corner I decided it was time for our annual read of Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende Devlin. This is a lovely book about Maggie and her Grandmother’s Thanksgiving Day dinner and her famous cranberry bread!
Earlier in the month while exploring this Thanksgiving Search and Match Sensory Bin, Caden had some questions about cranberries which lead to us making cranberry sauce and doing some other experiments with cranberries.
Caden was very interested in how cranberry sauce is made and was very eager to help make it! We just used the recipe on the back of the bag to make a basic cranberry sauce. All that was needed was rinsed cranberries, water and sugar!
This was a good opportunity for Caden to learn kitchen safety rules. While making the cranberry sauce we talked about how the stove gets hot and not to touch the stove top and also not to wildly stir the sauce so it didn’t splash up.
When the cranberry sauce was finished, Caden was interested in looking at it, smelling it, and touching it, but not tasting it. I think he licked a small taste off his finger. That’s all! I tried it, and it was very tart! I think we will use a different recipe next time to make some sweeter tasting cranberry sauce.
Check out these other cranberry activities we did!
