~Caden is 22 months~
We tried to stick with a Halloween theme this week, but Caden wasn’t much interested in what I planned. But learning still happened.
I had set up two felt boards during the week. The first one is a build your own jack-o-lantern board. I thought it would be really fun to create different faces with the various shapes. The second board shows 5 little ghosts that go along with the story Five Little Ghosts. I found the print outs in the ‘H is for Halloween’ packet by Oopsey Daisy. Despite my best efforts to interact with Caden and get him interested in the felt boards the only interest Caden showed in them was wiping all the pieces off.
On Monday we started off strong as usual. Shortly after Daddy left for work I cut open a pumpkin and Caden had fun exploring the seeds and guts for about 30 minutes! He probably would have played with it all day had we not needed to get ready for lunch.
While I made lunch Caden played with play dough. He really loves to play with play dough these days, and plays with it at least a couple of times a day. He has learned to roll it flat with a rolling-pin, and to roll it into a snake. He says “roll it. pat it.” And we sing Pattycake, and I mark the dough with a ‘c’. Here he is tracing the ‘c’ I carved into the dough with his fingers.
Caden and I also drew circles on his magnetic sketch board. He asked me to draw them and I also guided his hand as we drew. Then he drew some circular shapes on his own. We also played outside Monday afternoon. Now that the garden has been mostly harvested, Caden likes to get into it and dig in the dirt.
On Monday night, we went to a local event at the zoo called the Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular. There they have thousands of carved and lit pumpkins on display. It was a crazy event, with a long wait to see the pumpkins. It was neat to see all the pumpkins carved by artists but it was also stressful with a toddler. I probably wouldn’t go again until Caden is much older.
On Tuesday we made it to the playground and library. Caden had fun running around the park and exploring the big kids playground equipment.
We also filled our book bin with lots of books about Halloween and various other books of interest.
On Wednesday we just hung around the house. We played with the shape puzzle and the dot markers. Caden is getting better and better with this puzzle and is quickly picking up the names of the shapes. This week he learned the name of the triangle after playing a game (or rather watching me play) on pbskids.org. The dot marker page is from 3 Dinosaurs Halloween pack.
Grandma and Gramps came over for a pizza dinner Wednesday night. After dinner Caden and Gramps played with the play dough. Gramps made a play dough creature and Caden was giving it kisses.
On Thursday Caden played with his blocks. He has become more interested in building with his blocks and now likes to stack them up and doesn’t get frustrated at easily when they don’t go together easily. We didn’t do much else on Thursday because we were running errands and getting ready for Hurricane Sandy.
Friday was a beautiful day. In the afternoon while playing outside, I spotted a katydid sitting on his slide. I called Caden over to look at it. Caden was very interested in the “bug”. He wanted to touch it so badly. I would have let him if I was sure he was going to be gentle. But being the boy that he is he attempted to step in it a few times, so I picked it up and moved in to a tree along the fence.
For next week I had planned another week of Halloween activities, but since Caden doesn’t really understand Halloween yet and wasn’t too interested in what I had planned this week, I’ve decided to do a week of Fire Safety since October is Fire Safety Awareness month. And because Caden is really into Firemen and is going to dress up as one for Halloween.
