Materials:

  • Craft Stick Fencing (see how we made it HERE)
  • Play dough
  • Large Foam Dice

Supplies needed for Counting More or Less with Farm Animal Rainbow Counters

How to Prep:

To prepare this activity an adult will need to make and/or set up craft stick farm fencing. Check out our Big Red Barn Literacy Activity to see how to make the farm fencing. To set up the fencing use little pieces of play dough to stand four pieces of fence up to make a square. Set up two fence squares.

Then set out at least twelve farm animal rainbow counters and a die before inviting children to play and learn!

How to Play:

This activity can be played by one child alone, with two children or with an adult and child. To play, roll the die once and count out that number of farm animal rainbow counters and place them in one fence square. Then roll the die again, taking turns in necessary and count out that number of farm animal rainbow counters into the other fence square.

Next, an adult can ask the child:

  • Which fence has more animals?
  • Which one has fewer animals?
  • Do the fences have an even amount of animals?
  • How do you know?

My son and I played this quick game the other afternoon. It was a fun and hands-on way for him to practice counting to six, compare quantities and practice subitizing skills. It was also an opportunity for me to explain to him what “even” means in terms of numbers.
