Happy Fine Motor Friday! It’s good for toddlers and preschooler to do a variety of fine motor activities. Having different activities helps work different fine motor muscles and hand coordination which is necessary for handwriting. Fine Motor Fridays is all about giving you a bunch of ideas to do with your little ones! Be sure to check out activities from our co-hosts at the end of this post!
This week I am sharing two St. Patrick’s day themed activities that are great for working on fine motor skills and sneak in some alphabet letter recognition as well! The first activity, ABC Shamrock Smash is just like our Smashing ABC Moon Rocks which is a lot of fun! The second activity might also look familiar. ABC Shamrock Matching Fine Motor Activity is a St. Patrick’s Day twist on our ABC Star Hunt & Matching Game and some others we have done!

To have fun with these activities you’ll need a few supplies:
- craft foam shamrocks
- spray bottle
- cotton balls
- flour
- green coloring
- permanent marker
- toy hammer
ABC Shamrock Smash
To make your own ABC shamrocks to smash, just follow these directions from Learn, Play, Imagine for baked cotton balls. But instead of just making round balls to smash use green coloring and place three balls together in a shamrock shape! Once the cotton ball shamrocks are baked hard, use a permanent marker to write letters on them!
We were impatient with ours and didn’t let them baked until hard, so our shamrocks were really smooshy, and not hard, but they still worked as a fun way to practice letter recognition! Caden had fun choosing which letters to smash with his hammer!
ABC Shamrock Fine Motor Matching Activity
This has become a favorite activity around here! It’s guaranteed to get Caden interested in practicing letter recognition which is why I keep coming up with new versions of the game! For this ABC Shamrock Matching Activity, I used some precut craft foam shamrocks which I picked up at the Target Dollar Spot or The Dollar Tree, I can’t remember. Anyway, then I used a gold metallic permanent marker to write some letters on them.
I wrote the matching letters on our white board and hid the ABC shamrocks around the house for Caden to find! Then he had fun matching them up on the white board and squirting the water to make them stick! I usually use random letters, but you could also use this activity to help preschoolers learn the letters of their name!
